Cage Specifications
- Size - at minimum, large enough so bird can fully spread wings without touching sides of cage
- Bar Spacing
- Small birds - Finches, Canaries, Parrotlets, Parakeets, Lovebirds - bar spacing no more than 1/2 inch
- Medium birds - Cockatiels, Conures, Lories, Senegals, Quakers - bar spacing 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch
- Large birds - African Greys, Amazons, Macaws, Cockatoos - bar spacing 3/4 inch to 1 inch
- Material - stainless steel, powder coated steel, or steel - avoid galvanized and zinc
- Doors - at least 1/4" gap on all sides between door and frame
- Shape - flat-topped or domed - avoid round cages
- Perches - wood branches with uneven surfaces or twisted rope perches secured with stainless steel or plastic nuts and bolts - avoid perfectly symmetrical perches
- Bottom Lining - newspaper - avoid ground cob, walnut shells, etc.
- Placement - against walls in a well-lit area - avoid middle of rooms and drafty areas - provide area for privacy if placed by a window
Cage Care
- Change newspapers on bottom lining of cage daily
- Clean food dishes and water dishes daily - more often if contaminated
- Disinfect entire cage every other day with a mild solution of soap and water or GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) - GSE is the preferred method
- Some dishes and perches can be run through the dishwasher - keeping two sets of dishes and perches on hand makes it easier as one set can be in the dishwasher and one set in the cage
