Recommended Amounts
  • Critical for the health and long life of your bird
  • Pelleted bird food should always be available
  • Clean, fresh water should always be available
  • Certain nuts in moderation, some nuts not at all
  • Some greens in moderation, some greens not at all
  • Brown rice, pasta, or corn bread as a mash base (mash recipe below)
  • Any fresh fruits and fresh vegetables given should be washed thoroughly first
  • All food other than pelleted food can be fed once or twice daily but should be removed in 12 hours to refresh
  • Diet varies with species, always consult with your veterinarian first
    • Basic Diet = low-fat, low protein
    • Breads = small amounts occasionally
    • Cereals = small handful daily
    • Dairy = small amounts occasionally
    • Flax Seed = mixed in mash or sprinkled on top of mash
    • Fruits = one portion daily (berries = one to two per feeding)
    • Leafy Greens = should be given daily
    • Meats = small amounts occasionally as a treat
    • Nutriberries = one a day as a treat
    • Nuts (Small Birds) = pine nuts occasionally
    • Nuts (Medium Birds) = almonds occasionally
    • Nuts (Large Birds) = almonds, brazil nuts, hazel nuts, pecans, walnuts occasionally
    • Vegetables - three to four types daily

  • Cheeses - various lowfat
  • Chicken - well cooked - small amounts
  • Collard Greens - fresh
  • Corn - fresh or frozen
  • Cornbread - small pieces - limited
  • Cottage Cheese - lowfat
  • Crackers - unsalted
  • Cranberries - fresh or frozen
  • Cucumbers - fresh

Becky's Bird Mash Recipe (make a big batch of mash, keep some in the refrigerator and give fresh portions daily, freeze the rest!)

You can add or subtract any ingredients according to what you have on hand: Yolkie (Sunny)

Mixed Vegetables - frozen
Canned Corn
Pork 'n' Beans without the fat in the can
Carrots
Sweet Potatoes
Dry Oatmeal


For Daily Meal:
Add some raw vegetables, unsweetened cereal, and one piece of fruit
